Stating that they have no knowledge of his whereabouts, Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed’s family have appealed the police to find him.
Police had initiated a search for MP Ilham, stating that he is being sought for an investigation carried out by the Economic Crime Department. While police appealed the public’s help in finding the MP on February 9, he has not yet been located.
Police had arrested Ilham’s wife, Aminath Maasha Hassan at his residence on Sunday.
Speaking to the press after Maasha’s arrest, Ilham’s brother Zaalif Ahmed said Ilham was arrested on arrival at Velana International Airport. When Criminal Court released him on February 5 he came home, spoke to his wife and left, after which he did not contact the family, Zaalif said.
“Before leaving home Ilham told his wife that he might not be able to contact her for a few days. After that neither Maasha nor I had been able to contact him or find out his whereabouts. However, they are assuming we will know, since I am his brother and Maasha is his wife”, Ilham’s younger brother Zaalif said.
Ilham’s family also said that no matter how many times the police question them, or arrest Ilham’s wife, they cannot give them an answer, as they do not know where he is. His family also said that Ilham could just as easily be under police custody, and appealed the police to make the matter clear to them.
Pointing out that Ilham had four young children whose parents have been arrested, Ilham’s family said it has become clear to them that the police won’t hesitate to arrest his children as well.
Speaking about the matter, Ilham’s lawyer Ahmed Abdulla Afeef said that Ilham’s wife was arrested without any reason. The police were unable to state a reason for her arrest and have no right to arrest whoever they want even if the state of emergency has been declared, Ilham's lawyer said.
Pointing out that there is no legal reason to arrest and keep an innocent person detained for the crime of another, Ilham’s lawyer said he will do everything in his power to release Maasha.
After the declaration of state of emergency by President Yameen, many articles of the constitution were suspended and many politicians and their family members have been arrested by police.
While many described the move as an act by President Yameen to achieve his political agendas, others have stated that arresting the wives and other family members of political members is a vile act carried out by the government.
Police had recently arrested the wife of Justice Ali Hameed and two other family members. They also arrested Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim’s eldest son Ibrahim Siyad Qasim.
