Security forces have said that some people are trying to create unrest in the country, and advised them against it.
Security forces said this in a press conference on Monday, after receiving intelligence reports that a group of people are planning to create civil unrest in the country on February 16, Friday.
Speaking at the press conference, Spokesperson of police Superintendent Ahmed Shifan said that they have received intelligence reports that some people are planning to create unrest, face off the security forces and disrupt the peace in the country, and stated that they would not allow this.
“We will not allow anyone to create unrest in the country. Action will be taken against such people. We will also take action against those calling for residents in the islands to come to the capital, and those encouraging conflict in the country. Some people are trying to create discord in the country even now”, Shifan said.
Shifan also said the police and military will work as a unified body to establish peace in the country, and advised the public not to carry out actions that would disrupt peace.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s Spokesperson Adam Azim said maintaining peace in the country is their duty, hence they are working with the police to sustain peace. They have received reports that the protest planned for February 16 would create chaos and disrupt the harmony in the country, he said.
