Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s President Mohamed Nasheed has called on the people to gather near the party’s office on Thursday.
Nasheed said this in a tweet after police raided MDP office and arrested three members of the party on Thursday.
Nasheed’s tweet said SO officers are arresting MDP members, therefore all should gather near the party office immediately.
An official working at the office said police entered the office without a court warrant, saying that the search was being conducted under the State of Emergency.
The official also said that police entered MDP office while a meeting was taking place.
Police entered MDP office and arrested MDP’s National Council President for Inguraidhoo MP Hassan Ahmed, former Hulhumeedhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, and North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla’s husband Ahmed Shahid.
An official said police did not disclose the reason why they were conducting a search. Hence, it is not clear what the police aimed to achieve by searching MDP’s office, the official said.
The search comes at a time when the opposition parties had announced they are preparing for a mass gathering to be held on March 16.
Police had on previous occasions entered and searched MDP office for political reasons.
