Minister for Legal Affairs at the President’s Office Aishath Azima Shukoor says they do not intend to prolong the State of Emergency.
Azima said this in reply to a question by a journalist in the press conference held at the President’s Office. The press conference was only opened to Public Service Media (PSM) and foreign media outlets.
Azima said the State of Emergency will end on March 22, and that the government does not wish to prolong it further. Noting that the country is presently in normal condition, Azima said the order will only be implemented on those that violate the law.
The government announced the State of Emergency after refuting to implement a Supreme Court order, and arrested many under the State of Emergency. These include former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, and Justice Ali Hameed. Police had also arrested many politicians and some of their family members.
Most of the arrested are accused of conspiring to overthrow the government, while others are accused of offering and accepting bribes and disrupting peace in the society.
