The Elections Commission (EC) said on Wednesday that they would submit the request to grant the annual allocated state funds for political parties to finance ministry after finishing the administrative procedures, before the mandated due date.
Speaking to VNews on Wednesday, EC member Ahmed Akram said they are wrapping up the necessary administrative procedures needed to grant the funds for the political parties before the due.
According to Article 35 of the Political Parties Act, political parties should receive the funds allocated in the State budget before the end of the first three months of each year and the amount should be an amount from 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the annual budget.
Article 34 of the Act says the funds are to be divided among the parties according to the number of members registered with the party. It also says that the funds would be given to parties with 10,000 members or more; parties with a lesser number would not receive any funds.
While none of the political parties have received any funds, an official of EC said the three months are counted excluding the holidays; hence the due date would be May 8. Therefore, the commission will conclude all administrative procedures and request finance ministry to grant funds to all parties before the due is reached, the official said.
The state budget of this year allocates a total of MVR 24.2 million for political parties, while the amount allocated in the State Budget for political parties in 2017 was MVR 22.8 million.
EC said they will announce the exact amount each party will get at a later date.
While the opposition has been criticizing EC for the delay in granting the fund, the funds was released in the last week of October in 2017.
