Elections Commission (EC) has rejected the applications submitted to register two new political parties in the Maldives.
In a statement on Sunday, EC said that the application to register “The Great Green Connection” was rejected because the individual under whom the party was to be registered is already registered to another political party and had not submitted criminal records along with the application.
EC said that “Maldivian Republican Party” was not registered due to its similarity with Jumhooree Party (JP). “Jumhooree” is the Dhivehi word for republican.
EC said for these reasons its members unanimously decided that the two parties cannot be registered.
Maldives currently has six political parties – ruling Progressive Part of Maldives (PPM), opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Adhaalath Party (AP) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
