Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham has met with murdered blogger Yameen Rasheed’s family members and assured that she will do her best to ensure the hearing is an open one.
Yameen’s family and NGO’s have been appealing that his trial be open to the public and requested a meeting with the PG three weeks prior.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Yameen’s father Hussain Rasheed said that while the trial has begun after the end of the preliminary hearings, PG Bisham ensured that she will do her best to make it open to the public.
PG said in a week’s time the family will be given a presentation regarding the trial proceedings, Yameen’s father said.
“PG said a presentation will be given in a week’s time and the family members and a lawyer can be present at the meeting”, Hussain Rasheed said.
The PG only met Yameen’s mother Mariyam Shafeeqa and father Hussain Rasheed on Sunday. However, she stated that she will meet with the members of civil society later.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Shafeeqa said the biggest concerns are due to the amount of time passing without justice and the trial being closed off to the public. Her hope is that justice will be served one day, Shafeeqa said.
“I hope the hearing would be opened in the future. Even the PG said she would work to make this true, so this is our hope”, Shafeeqa said.
One of the senior members of the civil society Ahmed Tholal said as the case relates to the public, it should be opened to them.
“We are not dangerous. We are coming to meet the PG as the hearings are being closed off to the public in such an important case. The rights of the people have been denied and we only mean to question the PG regarding this. To be denied us this opportunity is disheartening”, Tholal said.
While it has been one year since Yameen was found murdered with 32 stab wounds, the hearings on the case is being closed off on the request of the State.
Police arrested seven people in relation to Yameen’s murder. Six people were charged in connection with Rasheed’s murder: Ismail Haisham Rasheed of H. Annaarumaage, Ahmed Zihan Ismail of M. Iraasmikuge, Ismail Rasheed of M. Thaaif, Hassan Shifaz of M. Kudhehi, Mohamed Dhifran of Sindhubaadhuge/GDh. Gadhdhoo, and Hussain Ziyad of East/M. Kolhufushi.
According to police both Haisham and Zihan were actively involved in the murder of Yameen, and were charged with deliberately killing someone using a sharp object.
20 organizations, both local and international, have called on the government to hold open trial hearings on Yameem’s case.
