Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has called on the authorities to release jailed former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, as the latter’s health condition has deteriorated.
Qasim said this in a tweet, expressing concern and sadness over the deterioration of Gayoom’s health condition while imprisoned.
Qasim said while Gayoom is 82 years of age, it has been three months since he was arrested and detained on an allegation. He also emphasized that Gayoom suffers from an ailment and is in serious condition.
Qasim said JP calls on the police and the Prosecutor General to release Gayoom, even if for medical treatment.
While it has been 90 days since Gayoom was imprisoned, his family has been continuously expressing concern over his medical condition. According to his family, although his condition worsened on Saturday night, he was not consulted to a doctor.
Gayoom suffers from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – dizzy spells, due to which he experiences a lot of difficulties. Thus, it is very likely that he could suffer serious injury while alone in the jail cell, the family said.
Gayoom’s wife, former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim has also appealed authorities to transfer him to house arrest due to his ill health. Gayoom too, had beseeched the Criminal Court judge to transfer him to house arrest in light of his age and health.
