Mariyam Nashwa, wife of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb who is serving a lengthy prison sentence, said Adeeb’s eyesight is worsening.
In a tweet on Monday, Nashwa said Adeeb’s eye sight is getting worse as Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) has not consulted him to an eye doctor since February 1. When asked to allow a consultation, Adeeb was shown to a skin doctor and an orthopedics doctor, Nashwa said, expressing worry over the situation.
Adeeb had previously beseeched the court to find a solution for his medical problem before he goes completely blind due to glaucoma, which has made his eyesight worsen. Adeeb’s lawyers have also repeatedly requested MCS to consult him to an eye doctor.
Although doctors had advised him to seek medical treatment abroad, MCS had turned a deaf ear to Adeeb’s plea.
Adeeb filed a case at Civil Court regarding the lack of adequate medical help provided by the government. However, at the hearing held on April 26, the state attorney stated that no doctor had advised Adeeb to seek medical treatment abroad.
Responding to that statement, Adeeb’s lawyer Moosa Siraj that it was an offence to openly lie and provide false information in court.
According to his family, Adeeb was suddenly transferred to Dhoonidhoo centre on May 3, citing the occurrence of a sudden situation. After his sudden transfer, Adeeb’s lawyer tweeted that the transfer was a violation of law.
The former VP is serving prison sentences totaling 33 years on terrorism and corruption charges, while many other charges have also been filed against him.
Adeeb was arrested during October 2015 and kept in Dhoonidhoo centre, after which he had been transferred to Dhoonidhoo five times.
