Jailed former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been taken to ADK Hospital after his health deteriorated on Friday.
A source close to the former President said that Gayoom was consulted to an ENT doctor and was being prepped for an MRI scan. The police did not disclose much information regarding Gayoom’s treatment, the source said.
Gayoom’s wife, former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim and daughter Yumna Maumoon visited him at the hospital.
While Gayoom has been in prison for a long time, his health began deteriorating a week back.
Nasreena said Gayoom suffers from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – dizzy spells, due to which he experiences a lot of difficulties. Thus, it is very likely that he could suffer serious injury while alone in the jail cell, she said.
She had been visiting Gayoom at Dhoonidhoo centre each night due to his ill health.
The current government had accused Gayoom of many crimes, including terrorism, due to which he was ordered by court to be kept in detention pending the outcome of his trial.
The family had beseeched the authorities to transfer Gayoom home, as his health had taken a turn for the worst. However, none of the authorities had paid heed to the request so far.
