Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim’s son and Villa Group’s managing director Ibrahim Siyad Qasim’s trial hearing has been scheduled for Sunday.
JP’s secretary general Ahmed Sameer said the lawyers were informed that a trial hearing of the bribery charge against Siyad has been scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Criminal Court on Sunday.
Sameer said that it has been more than a 100 days since Siyad’s arrest and that he has been detained unlawfully. Hence, it is their request for the people to show their support for Siyad by attending the hearing and gathering near the court, he said.
The last hearing on the case was held on April 15. The case was previously headed by Judge Hussain Shaheed, however Judge Ahmed Hailam was the presiding judge at the last hearing on Siyad’s bribery case.
Siyad’s lawyer Hisaan Hussain said the judge was changed suddenly without prior notice. The judge cancelled that day’s hearing when the lawyers noted that there are set procedures to follow when changing the judge, which was not completed in the case.
Citing an ongoing investigation, police arrested Siyad under the State of Emergency on February 7. Siyad was charged with offering bribes and ordered to be kept in detention pending the outcome of his trial by Criminal Court on March 21.
Many accuse that Siyad, who had never taken part in politics, was arrested as revenge as the government is unable to arrest his father Qasim Ibrahim. Others had called for his immediate release, saying that he was arrested on a baseless allegation.
