The crew of a foreign fishing boat that ran aground on a reef in HA. Atoll has set the boat on fire after Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)'s Coast Guard arrived at the scene on Thursday.
MNDF said they received report of the incident around 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. While the MNDF officers were active at the scene, the police were investigating the incident, MNDF’s media officer Captain Ibrahim Azim said.
Azim said there were only foreigners onboard, and eight of them jumped into the sea.
VNews understands the crew torched the boat and jumped into the sea when the Coast Guard vessel arrived at the scene and approached their boat.
The boat, assumed to be a Sri Lankan fishing boat, ran aground on a coral reef in Innafinolhu of HA. Atoll.
