Islamic ministry said more than 31,000 people have paid this year’s obligatory Zakat-al-Fitr charity till date.
Islamic ministry said 31, 944 people in Male’ region have paid a total amount of MVR 1,203,563 in charity by 2:00 p.m. of May 31.
Islamic ministry said this amount is the total paid to the ministry, Hulhumale’, and Vilimale’ through Bank of Maldives (BML), Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), Dhiraagu and Ooredoo.
Zakat is being collected in Male’ region from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Islamic Centre, Hulhumale’ Community Centre, and housing ministry’s housing unit in Vilimale’.
In GDh. Thinadhoo, Fuvahmulah, and Addu City Zakat is being collection at places designated by the ministry, while in all the other islands Zakat is being collected at the island council office.
Zakat has to be paid in rice or money which is equivalent to the amount of rice. If paying in rice, 2.4kg of the rice regularly consumed by the person has to be paid, if not, the equivalent monetary value has to be paid.
This year, 2.4 kg rice has been set as the amount for Zakat-al-Fitr. If the charity is being given in ordinary rice MVR 13 per person, if given in Thai rice MVR 43 and if given in Basmati rice MVR 81.
Islamic ministry said Zakat collection will continue until the 29th of Ramadan, 1439, Wednesday (June 13, 2018).
